The following module tested a range of skills linked to design knowledge, research and processes within both brief 1 and 2. A range of methods, techniques and medias were put into practice when developing final outcomes due to screen printing my J cards making them unique and hold texture to them. I also laser cut my invites created for group work breaking standard, digital graphic design work.
When focusing on studio brief 1, research was followed to express all of my design choices leading the final outcomes to have a direct link to my chosen sub genre and strong reasoning behind it in addition to layout, colours, type and visual imagery. My chosen created object 'wallpaper' also linked closely to research due to research stating that Tropical House music is often used as background music just like wallpaper is a background feature. With this brief screen printing was the most time consuming. This was due to it not always going correct first time, so numerous attempts had to be trailed in order to gain the desired look. Preparation also had to be made in order to screen print such as cleaning a screen and exposing the screen with my designed bitmap/ half toned digital negatives. For this reason time had to be managed greatly within this brief so other tasks such as making my object and flag had time to be designed and executed well.
In relation to brief 2, I believe our group work was a success due to us all working strongly as a group in accordance to communicating, time management and sharing our design ideas. However, I feel further deign ideas/ options could have been explored due to our final outcomes being highly expensive for such a low budget exhibition. I also believe that our concept should have been tested not just stated due to concern for certain set ups within the exhibition such as the netting idea to hang our flags off. This was questioned weather or not it would be strong enough for its purpose.
Overall, both breifs were heavily dependant on making the correct design choices and paying close attention to detail and research. I believe that my final outcomes are well executed due to handling my time management well and leaving time for errors to be corrected.

Final Outcomes
The following final outcomes feature a screen printed J-card front and back design as well as packaging, a flag and wallpaper. The following designs all directly connect to the genre ‘Tropical House’ due to all outcomes incorporating visually, tropical imagery such as the repetition of snake skin and tropical flowers. Also all of the final outcomes follow the same multi coloured, bright colour pallet consisting of CMYK colours. This was inspired by the fashion sense of the first producer of Tropical House music ‘Thomas Jack’ due to him always wearing bright, multi coloured, patterned shirts. The colours also give off summer vibes linking to the purpose of the sub genre.
The J-cards have been printed on water coloured paper stock linking to the natures side of the genre. This also relates to the music commonly being played around pool sides. Alternatively, the flag and wallpaper design are tropical scented to relate even further to the backgrounds and tropical scenes of holidays and summer.

screen printing - Day 4
Today my J -card were completed ! As I had time to spare I also decided to screen print covers for my cassettes onto bright coloured paper so my finals looked polished/ complete.

Screen Printing - Day 3
Today the fronts of my j cards were completed. Applying the text onto the J card was difficult due to it being so small. Also the ink on the bed smudge. For this reason I had to repaint in the smudged text and rexpose this area so the text remained legible. This slowed the overall process of screen printing down.

wallpaper initial ideas (object)
Due to my sub genre being highly focused on backgrounds it was decided that my object would be wallpaper. This was due to my genre commonly being used as background music and wallpaper is viewed as a background element. Various designs were created linking to the 'tropical' theme using bright visual imagery.
Screen printing - Day 2
Today 2 out of 8 layers were completed for my j card. However, tomorrow more layers should be completed due to now being more confident with the process/ method.

Screen printing - Day 1
Today the following negatives were exposed onto a screen ready for screen printing. Crop marks were put onto the designs so they would align correctly during the process. CYMK colours were also mixed with binder to prepare for screen printing the next day.

Final Flag / Development
The above were too dull for such a positive, summer related genre. Therefore further brighter flags were created relating to summer colours and positive vibes. Tropical flowers have been used within the flag design due to them symbolising summer, happiness and positivity.

Final outcomes for exhibition branding / Evaluation
Invite:
Catalogue:
Poster design:
Gifs:
Room Plan:
Overall, as a group we all collaborated together and worked at a productive pace in order to get tasks done as a team. We all successfully had allocated roles but set design rules and concepts so that the final outcome designs fitted each other and followed the same aesthetic. As a group we were also successful at communicating with one another to discuss ideas and concepts which enabled our final outcomes to link together.
When receiving feedback from peers, it was decided that the branding of our exhibition could have been stripped back by using the concept of our exhibition more rather than the bit mapped images. Other feedback given was that not all of our final outcomes were coherent, therefore more consideration into the designs should have took place. This could have been executed by more than one person doing each individual task so ideas were able to be discussed further.
When relating to my design input (making the invites) feedback stated that stronger card should have been used for the envelopes of the designs. This would have made the designs seems more polished and professional, especially due to them going to industry professionals. However, peers liked the individuality of the laser cut logo for the envelops of our designs as did our group.
When relating back to the planning of our exhibition our ideas were too costly and complicated for such a low budget exhibition. Some of our design choices were also unrealistic such as the netting for hanging the flags off. This is because it would nit have stayed stable causing part of the exhibition to collapse.
Invites - design development part 1 (invitation)
Inside slip:
Things to consider:
- Use double sided tape to join to pocket together for a neater finish
- Make sure the slip is the same size as the wallet. This way the pattern design will fit behind all of the logo.
- Experiment with the logo size cut out on the front of the wallet
