Advanced Preparation of positives for screen printing - Part 1

- When designing consider over printing (merging colours together)  and knocking out (keeping the colours separate)

- When preparing your positives consider halftones - (image made up of a grid of black dots rather than grey tones )

Must consider:

Frequency
- measured in lines per inch

Angle (to avoid Moiré patterns)
- for one ink = 15 degrees

Printing process:

- Must use a black and white laser printer
- Check output option - mode should be on separations 15 degrees

When using digital print use bitmap technique for A2 size in order to halftone (must be a grey scale image)

To experiment with shape of halftones you MUST bitmap your image

CMYK  for 'print' overprinted in order to print colour
ink on paper
Subtractive

Frequency
- measured in liner per inch (50lpi max)

Angels - for four inks (15,  75, 105, 155 degree )

The other kind of ink is 'spot' ink

Pantone colours are a spot colour reference system used in the commercial print industry

- They allow the accurate reproduction of colour - used in branding
- It can be cheaper - fewer inks makes production less expensive

Notes related to planning exhibition/ roles

- What is your basic idea/ concept?
- Does it connect to research?
- Is it a clear idea which you can apply to everything?
- What is your branding strategy and what rules are you following ? consider type, layout, images, colour and production
- Create a logo type, typeface
- Consider your time and cost of production
- Consider how you will present your work / how will you design your set up?

Roles:
 Design/ Presentation
1. Logo/ logotype / typeface
2. Social media - hashtags, Insta account
3. 10 min presentation

4. Poster
5. invites
6. Exhibition plan - Layout, work labelling,
7. Catalogue

My role - Create invites for the exhibition

Initial idea - typeface

The following typeface is too generic and does not function well as body text due to it only working for some titles. A simplified, less weighted typeface needs to be created in order for it to work on small J cards at a smaller scale.

Grop Crit / 1+1 feedback - Ideas to take forward

Surroundings...

- BEACH
- INSTRUMENT
- KYGO - WHO IS HE? (EXPAND YOUR RESEARCH)
- Paint with suncream?
- Think of other scents you could use
- Scented paper?
- Think about where Tropical House music was made - at home in bedrooms. Experiment with computers, mouses, keyboards
- Look at assembled objects

Flag Designs and J cards - Initial Ideas

Feedback:

- Snake print flag works best
- Palm tree flags could be executed better using alternating colours
- Don't over use generic imagery ( palm tree and sun )
- Use brighter colours such as orange, yellow and blues
- Floral print and snake print flag work the best
-You could try overlaying multiple snakes at different angles
- Textures work well. Experiment with zooming in and out of your images to see what the alternative impacts are
- Trail colons of tropical fruits
- Could include human figures (maybe on the beach)
- Images give off high impact and are bold.

Adrian Frutiger

Frutiger (pronounced [ˈfʁuːtɪˌgər]) is a series of typefaces named after its Swiss designer, Adrian Frutiger. Frutiger is a humanist sans-serif typeface, intended to be clear and highly legible at a distance or at small text sizes. A very popular design worldwide, type designer Steve Matteson described its structure as "the best choice for legibility in pretty much any situation" at small text sizes, while Erik Spiekermann named it as "the best general typeface ever".[2][3]

Initial ideas given from first group crit

- Think about surroundings
- Engage with moods
- Colours are important again to effect moods and surroundings
- For your object explore club wallpaper due to Tropical house music being created from dance and house music played in clubs

From the critique I have decided I want to push the idea of exploring tropical surroundings in relation to colours and senses. By doing so I will explore the mood and message of the music within my design work linking directly to my chosen sub genre.

Group work - Introduction to designing a flat

Pictograms

Pictograms are used to warm, guide or protect.

BOOK - Signs and Symbols

G = Protection
C = Object/ Container
D = END
A, 4 = Beginning

F are not signs as they hold no connections forming them to be one object/ figure.

Semiotics

Charles Morris
In his 1938 Foundations of the Theory of Signs, Charles Morris defined semiotics as grouped into three branches:

Semantics - sign and meaning
Pragmatics - relation between signs and sign- users or interpreters

Basic sign: The square

Basic sign: The triangle

Basic Sign: The circle

Basic Sign: The arrow

Basic Sign: The cross

Otl Aicher: Olympic icons, Munich Games in 1972

Aicher was intent on the event acquiring a radically different visual identity than the 1936 Games explored by the Nazis for their own ends.

Task set: Design 5 signs for your micro genre.

Sketch out ideas on grid.

Develop these ideas using either:

Illustrator
Hand drawn / Painted ( Then scanned )
Collage ( digitally/ analogue/ 2D / 3D )
Laying out objects ( photographed )

Tropical House music

Research: FACTS

- Tropical House music is a subgenre of deep house, with elements of dancehall and Balearic house.
- Featured at various summer festivals such as Tomorrowland
- Popularised  by artists such as Kayo, Thomas Jack, Matoma, Lost Frequencies, Seeb and Klingande.
Tropical house is a subgenre of deep house, which is itself a subgenre of house music.
- It was originally intended as a joke by its inventor, 20 year old producer Thomas Jack. Known also as 'trop house'.
The term house 'house music' came into practice as most of the DJs used to create their music at their house using synthesizers and drum machines such as the Roland TR-808, TR-909, and the TB 303
- Tropical house is the music of our generation: mindless, meaningless and complacent
- Tropical house is a sub-genre of the deep house that originated in the fjords of Norway
-It takes the usual characteristics of the genre, but adds some steel drums and marimba, pumping out hugely catchy synthesised major chord progressions to make you feel like you’re on a tropical beach.
- Feel good music created to distract
- The style Kygo developed in his Edinburgh bedroom, known as tropical house, has become absurdly, record-breakingly popular.

End of module Evaluation

Within this module learning about the theories in relation to grids and colour helped me to explore the conventions of designs. It also helped me create designs that worked and made me able to recognise straight away designs which did not. Learning the layout of grid systems helped learn the division between image and type and fitting them together within a design. It also helped me realise what grid systems were best suited for different purposes and content. I have also learnt that grid systems help uniform designs and created familiarity. In connection to colour theories I have realised that colour is a vital part of design as it creates visual impact whilst evoking emotion. It also impacts on the organisation of a design.

In relation to the book covers, different tasks which related to different softwares enabled me to experiment with unique styles such as with Edexcel, Word and experimenting with music notations. This enabled me to create fresh, unique ideas keeping away from the obvious. Peer reviews also helped me to review my work and spot improvements in order for my final book covers to be suited and relevant to the content and aesthetic of the books.

In order to improve the following module, I would have explored other related fashion biographies and fashion related magazines. I also would have explored different theories and view points in relation to colour theories and grid systems and have explored how they have been used in the fashion industry relating to the fashion aesthetic carried out throughout the book covers.

Final book covers

Tamara Mellon ‘In My Shoes’ reinforces the title by using a scanned image of a casual, converse shoe as the background image over the front and back cover of the book. This reflets Mellon’s casual, rough early life before her success. It also portrays that her lifestyle was not as glamorous as it seemed in order for her to become successful and be the co founder of Jimmy Choo. Although she produced high end, glamorous, costly shoes her life was not all that way within her hardworking, devoted career. The image of the shoe on the cover looks almost 3D to reflect the idea of the reader almost literally walking in Tamara Mellon’s shoes- as they read the book about her life. A more obvious approach has also been taken when placing the title of the book inside of the shoe. This looks almost like the brand/ label of the shoe to represent Mellon having a shoes brand.

Alexa Chung IT features a soft pink, scrunched T Shirt to reflect the idea of Alexa Chung being a clothes lover and model. She is also well known for her casual style.  Alexa recently has also introduced her new range of ‘slogan t-shirts’. Therefore, the background relates to this.
Sophia Amoruso dropped her education, lived life in a run down flat and scrounge around for a long period of her younger life, whilst being very poor. However, one day she reluctantly discovered a vintage leather jacket in a local store which she purchased for very little. She then put the jacket on ebay and made her first small fortune. This was the motivation and adrenaline rush she needed to start her own business. This then became a habit and lead Sophia to become one of the fastest growing retailers in the world being the co founder of Nasty Gal. In connection, a leather jacket has been used as the background cover of the book.

All of the book covers follow the same aesthetic by using the same colour scheme pink, black and white. They also follow the same aesthetic due to all of the backgrounds of the covers being scans of different materials relating to fashion. Didot is also the font used throughout all book covers as it is founded in Vogue magazine. This relates the covers to fashion even more and corresponds to the fact Tamara Mellon and Alexa Chung have worked for Vogue. All of the following book covers have been printed on a high gloss paper stock. This links to most fashion magazines including Vogue which also uses gloss paper for their covers.
