Group work - Introduction to designing a flat

Pictograms 

Pictograms are used to warm, guide or protect.

BOOK - Signs and Symbols

G = Protection 
C = Object/ Container 
D = END 
A, 4 = Beginning 

F are not signs as they hold no connections forming them to be one object/ figure. 

Semiotics 

Charles Morris 
In his 1938 Foundations of the Theory of Signs, Charles Morris defined semiotics as grouped into three branches:

Semantics - sign and meaning
Pragmatics - relation between signs and sign- users or interpreters

Basic sign: The square

Basic sign: The triangle

Basic Sign: The circle

Basic Sign: The arrow

Basic Sign: The cross

Otl Aicher: Olympic icons, Munich Games in 1972 

Aicher was intent on the event acquiring a radically different visual identity than the 1936 Games explored by the Nazis for their own ends. 

Task set: Design 5 signs for your micro genre. 

Sketch out ideas on grid. 

Develop these ideas using either: 

Illustrator
Hand drawn / Painted ( Then scanned )
Collage ( digitally/ analogue/ 2D / 3D )
Laying out objects ( photographed )
